Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains is one of the oldest and most esteemed wine grape varieties. Its origin is believed to be from Greece or the Middle East, though it is now grown in various wine regions around the world.
The name 'Petits Grains' is given due to the small size of the grapes, which are often found in tight clusters. The grapes are usually light yellowish-green in color and are known for their high sugar content.
This varietal produces intensely aromatic wines, often showcasing rich flavors of ripe fruits like apricot, peach and pear, along with floral tones of roses and elderflower. Some wines might also have hints of honey, musk, citrus, and tropical fruits.
Different wine styles can be made from these grapes such as dry, semi-sweet, sweet (including dessert and ice wines), and sparkling wines. They are also used for producing spirits like Moscato brandy.
It’s most famously used in the production of Moscato d’Asti, a slightly sparkling (frizzante), semi-sweet wine from the Piedmont region of Italy, and is the primary grape in the French dessert wine Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.
