Vinho Verde - Basto is a specific wine region of Vinho Verde, located in the northeastern part of Portugal. The region, which was demarcated in 1959, consists of just under 1,000 hectares of vineyards. It is one of nine sub-regions of the broader Vinho Verde wine region.
The Basto sub-region of Vinho Verde is known for producing wines with a slightly higher alcohol content than what is typically seen from Vinho Verde, along with a more full-bodied and rounded character. Most of the wines produced in this area are white wines, made mainly from the Arinto, Azal, and Malvasia Fina grape varieties.
The climate in the Basto sub-region is characterized by cold winters and hot summers, and the region's rough granitic soils contribute to the unique flavor profile of its wines. The wines from this area are known for their fresh, fruity, and slightly fizzy nature. Moreover, these wines are excellent when paired with the local cuisine which includes dishes like roasted lamb and codfish.
Despite Vinho Verde - Basto being a smaller sub-region, its contribution to the Vinho Verde wine industry is significant and the quality of its wines is highly appreciated by both local and international wine enthusiasts.
