Viognier is a white wine grape variety. It has a strong, rich, and notable aromatic profile, often compared to the likes of fruits such as peaches, apricots, and pears. It can also display notes of floral and spice, making it a complex, diverse and slightly elusive grape to understand. It is known for producing textured, lush, and exotic wines that are mind-blowing in their ability to express their terroir.
Viognier wines are usually on the fuller side of the spectrum, they have a medium to high alcohol content and often go through a fermentation process in oak barrels which gives them a creamy, almost buttery mouth-feel. It is native to the Rhône Valley in France, but it has since spread to other parts of the world like California, Australia, and South Africa.
Despite being a somewhat difficult grape to grow, due to its low yields and susceptibility to disease, the character and flavor of the wines produced from Viognier make it a favorite amongst many wine enthusiasts around the world.
